Enphase IQ8s & Grid Draw Question

quick question here about grid tie stuff, specifically with Enphase IQ8s and PGE. My brain's trying to wrap around this "back feed" thing.

So, I get that my solar panels feed the house first, then send any extra juice back to the grid. And if my panels aren't making enough, I pull from the grid, right?

Here's where my brain fogs up: Let's say my inverters are cranking out 3kW.

My house is just chilling, pulling maybe 0.5kW. Then BAM, the AC (a beast, like 4kW) suddenly kicks on, pushing my total house load to 4.5kW.

Does the inverter play nice and just pull that missing 1.5kW from the grid, or does it freak out, shut down completely, and make my whole house suck 4.5kW from PGE?

I think it's the smart option and just grabs the 1.5kW, but I'm just looking for a sanity check or someone to tell me I'm totally wrong!

You're spot on. The Enphase IQ8 inverters prioritize powering your home with solar energy first, and then, if needed, they pull any additional power from the grid.

So, if your solar panels generate 3 kW but your air conditioner starts running and needs 4.5 kW in total, the system will seamlessly pull in the extra 1.5 kW from PG&E, no shutdowns or worries involved.

These inverters are pretty clever; they adjust their output in real time to keep everything running smoothly without any interruptions. A friend of mine set up a similar system, and it operates just like this.

It's wild how seamless these systems are! Did your friend pair the IQ8s with Enphase batteries too, or just run solar-only? And have you noticed any lag when switching between solar and grid power during peak loads?
